A&E Elkins have a long tradition of apprenticeships dating back to 1963, when the company started up to the present day.

Our first apprentice was the son of our founders; Arthur and Brenda and is now our Managing Director, Ray Elkins. He passed his City and Guilds apprentice of the year award in mastic asphalt in 1971. Keeping with the family tradition, Ricky Smith was our last trainee to complete his apprenticeship in mastic asphalt. Ricky is now our Roofing manager.

We are very proud of our apprenticeship program and we believe wholeheartedly in nurturing and growing our own talent mentoring , training and guiding our apprentices through their apprenticeship until they are fully trained professionals .

In the last 5 years we have run a very successful apprenticeship scheme from which we now have a fully trained electrician , business compliance coordinator , several resident liaison officers and assistant site managers .

We currently have apprentices throughout the business including electricians , plumbers , multi-traders , surveyors , RLOs and site managers and are supporting all of them to pass their NVQs and get the most out of their work placements .

Each apprentice has a work mentor responsible for helping them with their day to day issues and for help and guidance with their college work/studies and an apprentice manager to oversee the whole program and process.

Our apprenticeship program received a certificate in recognition of our contribution to quality apprenticeships from Southwark council and one of our apprentices Jerel Morris received the first prize in Southwark apprentice of the year awards 2015.The award was presented by Councillor Richard Livingston and Jerel was commended for his hard work and dedication .

A & E Elkins Ltd believe very strongly in training for all staff at all levels.

We have a very good internal training programme which includes courses in asbestos awareness, first aid, fire safety, working at heights, IOSH and SMSTS.

For any courses we can’t provide in house we work directly with training providers to facilitate courses such as NVQ3 in customer care and more recently team leadership skills. All our apprentices will complete an NVQ during their apprenticeship .

Last year 15 of our front line staff completed an NVQ3 in customer care with another 5 on the course this year. Another 10 members of our staff are doing a team leadership NVQ. We also have 6 site managers that have recently completed an NVQ 6 in construction operations management

We have 2 other members of staff that have just completed an HNC in Building and Surveying and a further 2 that have gone on to degree level sponsored by us.

We feel that gaining qualifications and attending regular training encourages and motivates staff to be the best they can be and give them a recognised qualification to back up their practical skills. All staff are encouraged to suggest courses they would like to take and are supported throughout their qualification.
